Fantail goldfish are coldwater fish, requiring a water temperature of between 65° to 72° Fahrenheit. The ideal pH range is between 6.0 and 8.0, and the water hardness should be in the range of 5 to 19 dGH.

Goldfish (Carassius auratus) are social animals and when kept in groups can be seen regularly interacting with other goldfish. Keeping at least two goldfish in an aquarium is recommended to provide companionship and promote activity. Solitary fish can exhibit depression and lethargy.

Feed 2-3 times daily. It is important to avoid overfeeding goldfish as this can cause indigestion and/or contaminate the tank. In terms of the amount to feed, a good rule of thumb is to only feed an amount that the goldfish can consume in under two minutes or only feed as much as the size of the goldfish's eye.

Fantails are sociable, gregarious fish that need to live in the company of other fish to thrive and do well. That means you can keep as many Fantails as you have space for. So, if you have a very large pond, you can have a large group of these gorgeous, friendly fish.

Tank Size. As previously mentioned, Fantails grow to a fair size, so we recommend that you start with a 20 or 30-gallon tank, adding a further 10 gallons for each additional fish. Fantails are not fast swimmers, but they are dirty fish, producing lots of waste.

Despite the popular misconception, Goldfish are NOT suitable fish for small tanks or bowls. They need at least 20 gallons for one fish, and 10 for each additional, and that's the minimum.

While it is feasible to house up to four little goldfish in a 10-gallon tank, only two are preferable. Two twisty-tail or bubble-eye goldfish can survive in a 10-gallon tank if they receive proper care.

The general rule of thumb for stocking any fish tank is one inch of fish per gallon of water in the aquarium. You can keep about 2-4 fish in a tank this size as long as each fish is not larger than 1 inch.

Usually goldfish sit at the bottom of the tank due to not feeling well for some reason. Improper water conditions, parasites, stress, GI problems, and swim bladder problems can all cause a fish to sit at the bottom of the tank.

What Fish Can Live With Goldfish? Goldfish, on their own, require lots of space for proper keeping. Common goldfish, comets, and shubunkins cannot be kept with fancy goldfish. Additionally, some types of fancy goldfish, such as orandas, black moors, and fantails, shouldn't be kept with other fancy types like ranchus.

As a general rule, you can keep two goldfish in a 20-gallon fish tank. The rule of thumb for fishkeeping states that you should allow one gallon of water per inch of fish. However, remember that goldfish can reach 8 inches in length and bigger, depending on the variety you're keeping.

Goldfish tank decor is important

There are many great ways to care for your goldfish and, in our opinion, adding decorations to your tank is one of the best. Not only do decorations benefit your fish – helping to keep your goldfish happy – they also make the goldfish tank look nicer.

For example, even three common goldfish would need a tank size of 54 gallons (30 gallons + 12 gallons for the second fish + another 12 gallons for the third fish). Most people won't have a goldfish tank that size. If you want to keep lots of fish, we recommend choosing a smaller fish than goldfish!

We would recommend housing no more than 6 – 7 adult common goldfish in a tank this size however, as they still produce lots of waste, which can cause high ammonia, so strong filtration and regular water changes are still a must, even in a 100 gallon tank.

In summary: Goldfish don't need heaters – most of the time. If the conditions of your home or outdoor environment get too cold for either fancy or common Goldfish, you may need a heater. Remember that Goldfish are endothermic, meaning their metabolism is controlled by the external environment.

Goldfish cannot live in untreated tap water
