Find me the nearest petrol station– Anglo-Dutch oil giant Royal Dutch Shell's plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, unveiled last month, focuses heavily on selling low-carbon electricity, biofuels and hydrogen directly to households and electric car owners.
The strategy contrasts with other European oil companies, which, in their plans to reach net-zero emissions, pledged to accumulate massive amounts of capacity for renewable energy generation in the form of wind and solar power.

"Shell is a very big brand — that's what the 110-plus years of the company do for you," Oswald Klint, senior analyst at investment bank Sanford Bernstein, said in an interview. "They can use it to build their network" of gas stations.
What is the future of the gas station?
At the same time, Shell does not foresee a difficult turnaround of its traditional oil and gas business in the near term. Shell's annual oil production peaked in 2019 at about 1.7 million barrels per day, it said, adding it now expects production to decline by 1-2% annually. This could mean it will still be producing about a million barrels a day in 2050, which is about 40 percent below current levels, according to quick calculations.
That would mean Shell's oil production is falling much more slowly than BP, which said production would fall 40 percent by 2030, but well beyond Total, whose CEO said in October the French oil giant would have more or less flat oil production. .
“The company needs to generate the cash it needs to reinvent itself and shift its mix to renewable energy in preparation for a long-term net zero future,” said Russ Mold, chief investment officer at financial firm AJ Bell.
To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, including emissions from its own products, Shell has linked the wages of its 16,500 employees to a series of carbon reduction targets. It aims to reduce the carbon intensity of its energy products by 6-8% in 2023, 20% in 2030, 45% in 2035 and 100% in 2050 compared to the reference year 2016.

Part of that plan relies heavily on carbon offsets, which include spending an estimated $100 million a year on "nature-based solutions" such as planting trees.
But the real crux of the plan is scaling up retail and revising it to focus on selling renewable electricity directly to households and electric car owners. “We want to be the leading provider of pure Power-as-a-Service,” the company said.
Shell's plan to focus on the retail side of its renewable energy business will build on its existing strength as a retail supplier of petrol and diesel. Shell already owns 46,000 retail companies and wants to expand this to 55,000. (“Retail sites” refers to gas stations, a spokesperson said when reached by phone, but the company did not respond to further questions.) At the same time, it wants to expand its electric car charging network from 60,000 power chargers to about 500,000. until 2025
Together, the increased number of EV chargers plus an extensive retail network provides Shell with a way to continue assembling its products, just as it currently sells its own petrol at Shell-owned retail locations, while earning revenue from other businesses on the Forecourt. Shell will probably also aim to sell biofuels and hydrogen in these stores: it plans to increase the amount of biofuels and hydrogen in the transport fuels it sells from 3% now to 10%.
Best gas stations in 2022: fuel quality, discounts and convenience
“This is the [retail] lobby of the future, with EV charging, there will be hydrogen, liquefied natural gas, and then you have a restaurant and a mall,” said Clint of Sanford Bernstein. “Charging will look very different from how we think about it now.”
Shell's plan does not only focus on retail locations. It also aims to strengthen the direct sale of low-carbon electricity to households, businesses and commercial enterprises. In a statement last month, Shell said it expects to supply power to more than 15 million residential and business customers worldwide.
The power he wants to sell in these stores and to homeowners and businesses may not be of his own generation. Shell said only that it plans to double its electricity sales to 560 terawatt-hours a year by 2030 - a goal it cannot achieve by producing its own electricity, but by buying it from others in wholesale electricity markets. In contrast, Total, BP and Eni have all defined specific amounts of capacity they want to reach by a certain date, locking them into plans to build or buy many physical wind and solar farms. (See table.)
By relying on the electricity trading team to simply buy a lot of power generation from the market, rather than buying the plants themselves, Shell could avoid paying exorbitant amounts to expand its production portfolio. Total boss Patrick Pouianne recently called valuations of renewable energy assets "crazy."
Fuel tax holiday can stab Ct gas stations with a big bill
Despite the detailed plans, Shell is not yet committing the farm to its retail-focused renewable energy operation. The near-term spending plans make it clear that renewable energy in any form remains a small fraction of total capital expenditures. Shell plans to invest only $2-3 billion in renewable energy and related consumption categories, or only about 10% of total consumption. Meanwhile, it will spend $8-9 billion on chemicals, products and integrated gas and $8 billion on upstream.
In the long run, the company said, capital spending will shift from oil and gas to a portion of the business focused on low-carbon fuels and its expanding retail network. These ventures will ultimately attract "about half of the additional capital expenditure."
“Shell still needs to try to retain shareholders with nice short-term earnings and dividends while executing on its long-term strategy,” said AJ Bell's Russ Mold. To stock up, "you have to drive four or five miles to get to Kroger or you have to go all the way to Mason," said Holt resident Mike Klauka, who lives on Dawlind Drive. “We haven't had a gas station in Holt for years.
USA 2 GO plans to open a specialty store and fuel center on the southeast corner of Һolt and Aurelius Road, the former Bay Station site.

The station will have six pumps and a 5,000-square-foot store that will sell wine, beer and spirits. It could open as early as December.
"It's so much more than your average gas station," said Bob Collen, the company's director of sales and marketing. "When people see our facilities, they become a local shop."
In addition to the typical snack offering, the store will also sell fresh sandwiches and wraps. They have craft beer on tap that is sold to the public in pitchers. It will hold approx. 1000 bottles of wine.
At one time there were at least four gas stations in the center of Һolt. The Bay and Standard service stations were located at the intersection of Һolt and Aurelius roads. Both closed more than ten years ago. In the mid-2000s, there was a Clark gas station in what is now the parking lot of Charlie's Bar & Grill.

The last gas station in Һolt was Marathon next to Һolt Pharmacy at 2313 Cedar St. The owner was left with taxes and the Ingham County Treasurer closed foreclosure on the property in 2015. It is now a vacant lot owned by the Delhi Downtown Development Authority.
The only gas stations in the city of Delhi are located on the border with Lansing: the Kroger gas station at the corner of Cedar Street and Willoughby Road and US 2 GO at Bishop and M-99, opened in December 2016.
“We have a gas station here in the desert,” said John Elsinga, Delhi city manager. "The gas stations themselves don't survive the way they used to."
But Howard Haas, executive director of the city's DDA, believes the connected market will make USA 2 GO a success in downtown Holt, even if their predecessors weren't.
