Is k1 kerosene safe to burn indoors? ›

The only fuel approved for indoor kerosene heaters is K-1 kerosene. Lesser quality fuels will cause problems (see below).

Red kerosene comes from the Federal government requiring kerosene not intended for road use (and, subsequently untaxed) to be dyed red. 1-K kerosene intended for road use is the same clear kerosene intended for kerosene heaters and our recommendation for purchase.

K-1 Versus K-2 Kerosene

A: The main difference is the sulfur content. K-1 is very pure kerosene with low sulfur content and is most commonly used. K-2 can have as much as 10 times more sulfur. The fewer the impurities in the fuel, the cleaner it will burn.

In addition to carbon monoxide, kerosene heaters can emit such pollutants as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide. Breathing these substances can create a risk, especially to such people as pregnant women, asthmatics, individuals with cardiovascular disease, elderly persons and young children.

1-K. One-K grade is the purest form of kerosene. It's clear or slightly yellow, with a maximum sulfur content of 0.04 percent by weight. Due to its low sulfur content, it's possible to burn 1-K kerosene without a flue to remove combustion byproducts from the room.

Kerosene is also called #1 diesel fuel oil, whereas regular diesel is designated as #2 diesel fuel oil. Some people consider it similar enough that they may try to use it interchangeably with regular (#2) diesel fuel.

What type of kerosene should I use? The only fuel approved for indoor kerosene heaters is K-1 kerosene. K-1 kerosene is most commonly found at local convenience stores and service stations. Only buy kerosene that is rated K-1.

DON'T ever burn red kerosene in an indoor oil lamp, because the fumes from the red dye can be harmful. K-1 Kerosene can be used in indoor lanterns but contains sulfur and other impurities that can give it an unpleasant, oily smell when it burns (which can give some people a headache).

Blue Burn Premium Kerosene—commonly referred to as Blue Burn Boiler Kero, Premium Kero and Kero for Boilers—is a kerosene fuel with an additive mix for use in domestic boilers. This additive mix has been manufactured to help boilers run cleanly, smoothly and more efficiently.

1–K (“low-sulfur”) kerosene contains no more than 0.04% sulfur by weight; 2–K has no more than 0.30%. ASTM considers 1–K as suitable for use in flueless appliances (e.g., portable heaters), while 2–K is suitable for flued appliances. Both grades are designated for use in “illuminating lamps” (ASTM 2008).

The short answer is no, it is not recommended to use 10-year-old kerosene for heating or other purposes. Kerosene has a shelf life of only 1-2 years so after 10 years, it may have significant degradation in quality and can produce more undesirable byproducts when burned.

In the summer months, expect 5 gallons of heating oil to last 5-10 days. On a cold winter day, however, 5 gallons of heating oil may not even last a full day. Order heating oil as soon as possible when you are low during the winter to prevent a runout.

Like oil lamps, they are useful for lighting without electricity, such as in regions without rural electrification, in electrified areas during power outages, at campsites, and on boats.
